New Microprocessor company sets up in York
Apitronix opens York office to join the UK real-time cluster
York-UK, April 2026
Why York?
Apitronix Semiconductor is developing the world's most powerful real-time microprocessor to be used in cars, robots, UAV's and safety critical systems. So naturally it wanted to locate in a region that would give it access to talent and experience to support its growth.
Since the University of York has had a world leading expertise in real-time systems since the '80's it would always have been a contender. It's also where Dr Ken Tindell started his first company in the sector, that was subsequently sold to Bosch. Since then Bosch has grown that presence in the city to over 100 employees.
But the university has also given birth to other related companies, such as Rapita, and is part of the reason why so much rail safety critical controls work is based in the city.
The move has enabled the companies first hire in the city to happen already, with a clear path to grow the team further.
The company has opened office space at East Coast House, the former rail-headquarters, as part of Wizu Workspace.
Leader of City of York Council, Cllr Claire Douglas said:
"It’s fantastic to be able to welcome a new business of the calibre of Apitronix to York. This is just the latest example of a high-tech business choosing York as a place to establish itself and grow. Apitronix is at the cutting edge of technology, developing the world's most powerful real-time microprocessor to be used in cars, robots, drones and safety critical systems. It joins a long line of York innovators over the centuries.
The decision to locate in York reflects the city’s position as the UK’s top performing city for good growth and also one of the country’s most dynamic business locations, and I’m grateful to everyone who helped make this happen, including our Inward Investment team. To other businesses thinking about where to locate, our door is always open and our fantastic team are ready to work with you. Get in touch by contacting economicgrowth@york.gov.uk.”
